CO-AUTHORSHIP, SCIENTIFIC ETHICS, PUBLICATION ETHICS, ETHICAL VIOLATIONS, CASE STUDIES

Co-authorship in Research Publications: Ethical Aspects

Yeremenko Tatyana V.

The main areas in which ethical issues on the co-authorship of research papers have arisen are studied in the article. A comparative analysis of the points of view that have been expressed in the literature on the criteria and standards of ethical regulation of co-authorship of research papers is made as well as some guidelines, codes of publication ethics and recommendations that have been produced and implied by professional committees, associations and publishers of scientific literature are studied. The relevance of ethical solutions to problems arising in the scientific co-authorship is specifically highlighted for the Russian academic community. Cases from the collection of the international Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) are used to exemplify typical ethical violations in writing academic papers with multiple authors. It is proved that the deviations from the norms of academic ethics arise in the areas of addressing issues such as: (1) who should be included as a co-author of research paper, and how to determine the personal contribution of each co-author? (2) what a sequence of authors’ names should be given? (3) who should not be included as a co-author but should be acknowledged? Inappropriate authorships such as ghost authorship, honorary authorship and guest authorship are described and correlated to effects of “N et al.” citation rule and “the Matthew effect” in science. The potential of case approach to the diagnosis and effective solutions of difficult cases in the area of co-authorship is revealed and illustrated with three examples from the COPE collection of cases.
